regardless of seasons… this is how she moves…

Snow has a memory.

In the wind and the woods, I watch her, flakes on frozen fields, and I watch how she always remembers.

I’ve come away to the wilderness to hear.

The children, my mama, they are ahead, taking the trail into the hush of the woods.

I stand for awhile on the road, my hands deep in pockets, back to the wind, fixed by how this snow makes it’s way. Reminiscent.

If I look down the road, the snow, it moves like the sea ebbing up on the shore, the way the ocean meets land, seeking, reaching, finding. All this white was once water. And the snow remembers the sea, remembers whence it came, remembers what it’s about.

Regardless of seasons, she always moves the same.

The sun is snagged in the trees.

Kids run through the snow, the dog after them.

An ash leaf, brown and crinkled, scuttles across the trail.

Mama and I stand in the still.

Winter’s whispering. I am listening.

Home, children drop coats inside the door. There is yelling. Boots strewn. I really need to scrub out the mudroom sink. I try to find a hanger in this mess of a closet for my coat. A loud argument over who moved a piece in the chess game left out.

And for a moment in the midst, I have a memory. I remember whence I came, remember grace, remember Who I am about. I take a deep breath and smile.

Regardless of seasons, she always moves the same.

I put the kettle on. Set the cups out on the counter.

The kettle whistles and the heat makes the water whisper steam and I watch how it moves, the always remembering.

“If a sudden jar can cause me to speak an impatient, unloving word, then I know nothing of Calvary love.
For a cup brimful of sweet water cannot spill even one drop of bitter water, however suddenly jolted.”
~ Amy Carmichael
