Mama comes home with us after Sunday preaching at the chapel, her white hair twisted up and her love all flowing free.
She hangs her coat on one peg in the mudroom and slips an apron off another, the way a woman takes off the world and wraps a towel around her waist.
She and Hope make peach cobbler, measuring sugar out of the bluing mason jar.
Shalom and I make biscuits. The Farmer ladles out yesterday’s bean and corn soup.
It’s Sunday dinner and it’s simple.
I ring the bell for everyone to come.
And His banqueting table’s extended for the weary and the tired, the broken and discouraged, the overwhelmed who don’t know how to get through and we can get through today because we’ve been given every gift in Christ and today we can do the work of Christ because we’ve been given the abundance of Christ.
I don’t need a thing, but to hunger for Christ; I don’t need a thing but to have an appetite for more Jesus.
Every gift from God already given! My plate is already full — with the feast!
In every way, every child of God has every gift from God and salvation isn’t only a free gift — it is every gift ever needed.
In Christ I need nothing — but to whisper thanks.
Mama sits across from Hope and The Farmer sits beside me and Shalom on the other side and the boys all come tumbling and rumbling in and we take hands and Levi says it all smells good and Kai asks if we can see it, the heat rising from the biscuits, like a ribbon wrapping upwards.
I smile and wink.
We bow our heads over every needed gift and give thanks for His love flowing down all free.
“I always thank my God for you because in Christ you have been made rich in every way…
You have every gift from God while you wait for our Lord Jesus Christ to come again.” 1 Cor. 1:5,7 NCV
“Just think—you don’t need a thing, you’ve got it all!
All God’s gifts are right in front of you as you wait expectantly for our Master Jesus to arrive on the scene for the Finale.” 1 Cor. 1:7 MSG
